Why is eye care important? Jesus' words in Matthew 13:16 say, “Blessed are your eyes, for they see. Blessed! It is good to have eyes that are healthy and free of any eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) AMD is a popular eye disease that affects the central part of the retina, leading to distortion or loss of vision. Smokers, people with high blood pressure, and people in their golden years are at risk of developing this condition. So it is best to start eye care now with a healthy balanced diet. In Genesis 1:29, God said, "Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on all the earth and every fruit tree for your food." and verse 31 reads, "God looked at what he had made. It was all very good!" The scriptures, believe it or not, say that fresh fruits and vegetables are good for human health. Vitamins A, C, and E contained in fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables are essential for eye nutrition. Vitamin A is good for the cornea, vitamin C helps keep capillaries in the retina healthy, and vitamin E helps protect eye cells from free radical damage. Copper and zinc are also essential for eye nutrition. Foods rich in copper, such as whole grains and oysters, are essential for the development of proper eye structure. While eating seafood, eggs, and tofu releases zinc, which aids in nutrient absorption and waste removal. Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon and tuna are also good for the eyes. It helps reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and blocks other eye diseases such as dry eye syndrome. Some foods you should not eat for eye care purposes are processed meats and ready-to-eat foods because they are high in sodium, which contributes to hypertension, which can lead to macular degeneration. Fried foods, especially those fried with trans fats, increase the level of bad cholesterol in the body, which can cause various eye diseases. Note that you need to hydrate, but drinks like sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine are not necessary to nourish your eyes. Avoid any of these if you can, or at least drink in moderation. Remember, the best way to stay hydrated is to drink water. In addition to a healthy diet, this includes regular exercise, sufficient rest, a healthy body weight, quitting smoking, using appropriate glasses, and having your eyes checked by a doctor. This is all part of proper eye care. When you eat healthily, exercise regularly, and get proper rest, you are most likely to reach a healthy weight. This results in controlled blood pressure, controlled cholesterol, and a low risk of diabetes, which means a low risk of vision problems. Eye care also includes ensuring clean hands when handling contact lenses. Wear sunglasses when exposed to the sun and use appropriate safety glasses to prevent eye damage. It is important to have your eyes checked by an eye specialist at least once a year. If you discover that you have an eye disease, learn about the risk factors and possible treatments. Some eye diseases cannot be cured, no matter how strictly you follow an eye nutrition diet, the condition can be irreversible.
