Normally, the immune system protects our body from attack by foreign elements. Immune cells target and destroy foreign bodies such as bacteria and other pathogens. But in MS, the immune system mistakes myelin (the fatty covering that protects nerve fibers) for a foreign substance and destroys it. Therefore, multiple sclerosis is also called a demyelinating disorder. Why does the body insult the myelin coat?
