  Anxiety Disorder When faced with potentially harmful or distressing triggers, feelings of anxiety are not only ordinary but necessary for survival. From the earliest days of mankind, the approach of predators and impending danger set off alarms in the body and enabled the individual to take evasive action. These alarms are visible in the form of an accelerated heart rate, sweating, and increased sensitivity to the environment. A rush of adrenaline in response to danger causes these reactions. This surge of adrenaline is known as the fight or flight response. It prepares people for physical confrontation or running away from threats to safety. For most modern individuals, escaping from larger animals and immediate danger is a less pressing concern.
